About Dave
You want sea, surf and Hollywood movies? Where else are you going to go except Thanet, of course? And if you think I'm joking (well, all right I am a bit but only a bit) then it's only because you've never been to Joss Bay. I might be a bit biased of course because I've always called it home. As a kid it gave me the time of my life - and now it earns me a living, which for the last 16 years has meant working the foreshore as lifeguard and surf coach.
We used to joke about Baywatch but this is for real! As part of the 10 man team responsible for water safety during the filming of Robin Hood, keeping an eye out for Russell Crowe and the crew was great, but no more of a responsibility than looking after all the other visitors we get all year round - making sure everyone's safe so they can do what we do best: mess around in the surf, thanks to the Joss Bay Surf School, which I run.
It's the only British Surfing Association approved surf school in south-east England and we're heavily involved in national disability surf programmes. This is a place that has given me so much. There's nowhere else like it. This is a place that makes a real difference.
