About Heather

When we moved to Westgate-on-Sea in May 2009, it was a completely new venture for us. I was a hairdresser for 36 years and although I always loved my chosen career, it was becoming increasingly for me to carry on standing for long periods at a time while cutting hair - not that I am an old crook but my feet began to really ache!

So, I sold my hairdressing business and wondered what to do next. It soon became apparent that I needed to get my teeth into something otherwise I was in danger of procrastinating!

My first memory of the beach was on a trip to Margate. My parents at the time worked in a local toy factory called Sebels and their work's day out every year was to Margate by coach - what fantastic days they were too! As a teenager, my friends and I used to visit Dreamland - we had a ball!

I have wonderful memories of Thanet and when I had my children, our holidays and day trips were in Thanet too. Now we live here, our grandchildren come to visit us and they can't wait to come each time.

I love running our guest house and count my blessings for it. To come down in the morning and cook breakfast for my guests and have a good chat is a great start to the day. They ask me where to go and for places to eat, and now guests are returning they become friends. It's great to open up your home and look after so many people. I always thought that I would love to have a guest house one day, and the dream has now come true for me.

I feel passionate about Thanet and would like to help in some way to improve the image it has. We need to raise the moral and clean up the darker areas. I feel the changes are coming, but whenever someone starts to be negative about the area I always defend it and say it's on the up again. The buildings are so beautiful, they just need someone to care for them. If everyone (not just a few) went out and cleaned their front doors and windows, put a plant on their porch, cleaned up after their dogs and picked up their rubbish, that would be a start.

When things are bad, they can only get better. I feel very positive that things are on the up - after all, I'm here now!

Heather won the Serviced Acommodation Employee of the Year Award at the recent Thanet Pride Awards 2010.
