About Sandy
You might suspect from my unusual first name that I'm not actually a native of Kent - and you'd be right! In fact my family moved here from Scotland when I was barely a year old! But Kent is where I've lived all my life and it's really the place that made me, not least by giving me some tremendous opportunities...
Since I was young I've always wanted to be an actor and the holiday workshops run by the The Brook Theatre in Chatham (which still run today!) are what developed my skills and gave me the confidence that perhaps otherwise I would never have found! It wasn't just in Chatham though - in term time there were amateur dramatics in my home town, Sittingbourne, and in Canterbury there was the Marlowe Youth Theatre, a society that let me perform on one of the biggest stages in the county. The theatre is being rebuilt now, but the new complex looks to be more impressive than ever!
Now I'm building on these opportunities by studying for a degree in Drama and taking the first steps on my career. After looking all over the country for the course most suited to me however, it turned out that the best one was right under my nose, at The University of Kent!
Drama's only one part of my life though - I've always enjoyed singing and the youth organisation 'Kent Music' gave me plenty of opportunities to do so. I've never had singing lessons, but through 'learning by doing' at summer schools in Benenden, West Kent, I'm now a member of both the Kent Youth Choir and the Kent Youth Barbershop - something I'm immensely proud of and will always remember as a great experience. There's the rock scene as well though, which has produced some legendary bands over the years. I'm proud to be part of it and with the Canterbury/Medway band 'Shatterpoint', I've been playing some of the best pub and club venues across the county, as well as moving into the capital too!
When I'm not busy singing, playing a guitar or acting on the stage, you can often find me at 'Kent Life', a family attraction near Maidstone where I work part time as an 'Entertainments Team Member'. So I get my fair share of dressing up, piglet racing and acting like I'm six again!
So Kent has really offered me everything, and I've taken everything it's given me.
