Anne Rutterford described this place as...

It is a collection of remains of Fortifications from the time of the Napoleonic war. A climb up the Western Heights is the usual way to get to these, but it is possible to drive up and park at the road that goes near the top of the Western Heights and walk down.

If you get the opportunity, visit on one of the open days when the Drop Redoubt is open and get the chance to look deep inside the defences and maybe climb the stairs of the Grand Shaft.

I have lived in the Dover area for about 30 years and only recently discovered the attractions of the Western Heights. The forts have information about their usage and it is possible to climb up inside some of the remains. The views are excellent.
